How Your Parents Affect How You Love

Do parents influence a child’s expression of love? This is where a person’s upbringing comes into play. As children, we learn from our parental examples. Boys look to their father for a strong male role model, just as girls look to their mother for guidance. Of course, with single parent families the dynamic is slightly different, though the child usually looks for role models outside of the family unit for further understanding.

Therefore, if you inhabit the qualities of your same sex parent, you will usually find yourself attracted to the qualities exhibited of your opposite sex parent. Don’t panic! We’re not going all Sigmund Freud on you. There’s nothing more sexually revolting than a parent, right? However, the positive (and sometimes negative) qualities exhibited by your parent(s) are what you have observed most of your life. If a girl’s father was kind and fearless, then later on she will look for a man with those positive qualities. If a boy’s mother was patient and attentive, then later on he will look for a woman just as supportive.

Besides parental roles, other factors that may determine relationship compatibility include religious upbringing, moral outlooks and individual traits and interests. In short, most of what you were as a child is still what you are (though you have matured over time). Human beings often find themselves attracted to what is familiar. And what’s so terrible about that? Isn’t it great when you finally meet someone that shares your love for 1980s cartoons? Nevertheless, getting together with your ideal mate can be difficult sometimes. This is because there are two distinct perspectives of love: male and female!
